SEE Learning Courses

The Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics offers different course options for preparing educators to bring SEE Learning to their students and classrooms, starting with the free self-directed course SEE 101.

SEE 101 results in a certificate authorizing an individual educator to use and teach SEE Learning resources in their individual classroom.

If your school or organization wishes to implement SEE Learning more broadly, such as in multiple classes or to bring SEE Learning to other schools and settings, we ask that you contact Emory University or an official SEE Learning affiliate in your country to engage in supported SEE Learning. See below for a list of these offerings

SEE 101 is the first step on your journey towards bringing Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning to the youths you serve. This orientation course is designed to give you an introduction to the SEE Learning program. SEE 101 is organized into 7 modules. Each module introduces key components that will be important for the implementation of the SEE Learning curriculum into your educational setting.

The 7 modules include:

2. Empowering Students
3. Exploring Awareness, Compassion, and Engagement
4. Understanding the Curriculum
5. Fostering Capabilities within Students
6. Fostering Capabilities within Yourself
7. Conclusion: Embarking on the SEE Learning Journey

The following are online offerings available for preparing educators to deliver SEE Learning:

• “SEE 101” (online, self-directed)
  • Format: Online, self-directed course that generally takes 3-5 hours to complete.
  • Purpose: To give a general orientation to SEE Learning for educators interested in using the SEE learning curriculum, either individually or as part of a larger school-wide effort. Completion of SEE101 unlocks the full curriculum and authorizes educators to use the curriculum in their classrooms. Schools implementing SEE Learning on a larger scale may wish for additional preparation and support.
  • Prerequisites: None
  • Cost: None
  • Size: Unlimited
  • Target Audience: K-12 educators and general interest

• “Taste of SEE Learning” (online)
  • This is a single live two-hour, one-time session held on Zoom, hosted by SEE Learning facilitators. This single session provides a general overview of the SEE Learning framework and program with a small amount of experiential content.
  • Prerequisites: All participants should have completed SEE 101 first. Organizers should contact Emory at seelearning@emory.edu or a SEE Learning affiliate in your region.
  • Size: 50-150
  • Target Audience: K-12 educators and general interest
  • Standard Fee: No cost to participate in an already scheduled session if space allows. Otherwise, $1250 USD is the standard fee for organizations wishing to host this course. This rate may be discounted under certain circumstances.

• “Getting Started with SEE Learning” (online)
  • This is an educator preparation workshop that consists of three (3) two-hour sessions, separated by a few weeks, held live via Zoom. It prepares educators to teach the content of chapters 1 and 2 of the curriculum (which amounts to 13 sessions, or generally about 3 months of content).
  • Prerequisites: All participants should have completed SEE 101 first. Organizers should contact Emory at seelearning@emory.edu or a SEE Learning affiliate in your region.
  • Standard Size: 30-100
  • Target Audience: K-12 educators who will be implementing SEE Learning
  • Standard Fee: No cost to participate in an already scheduled session if space allows. Otherwise, $3750 USD is the standard fee for organizations wishing to host this course. This rate may be discounted under certain circumstances.

• “Educator Preparation Workshop” (in-person)
  • This is the standard 3-4 day educator preparation workshop for in-person training, consisting of three or four full days (7-8 hours per day), held live and in person. It prepares educators to teach the SEE Learning curriculum, and prepares schools and organizations to engage in full “supported” SEE Learning. Note: In-person educator workshops offered by Emory have been suspended temporarily due to COVID-19 and this may apply to international affiliates as well.
  • Prerequisites: All participants should have completed SEE 101 first. Organizers should contact Emory at seelearning@emory.edu or a SEE Learning affiliate in your region.
  • Standard Size: 50-120
  • Target Audience: K-12 educators who will be implementing SEE Learning
  • Standard Fee: When travel is required, host organizations typically cover the cost of lodging, meals, venue, and other applicable fees for facilitators. Other fees may apply.

• Ongoing Implementation Support
  • Format: individual 1-2 hour sessions held live via Zoom.
  • Purpose: To support further training and implementation for schools that are engaged in implementing SEE Learning.
  • Prerequisites: All participants should have completed “Getting Started with SEE Learning.” A formal agreement, contract, or MOU with Emory University.
  • Standard Size: Implementation team or all teachers engaged in implementation
  • Target Audience: K-12 educators who are implementing SEE Learning / SEL implementation team
  • Standard Fee: Fees may apply.

• SEE Learning Community Webinars (online)
  • These are regular 90-minute topic-focused sessions held live via Zoom intended to facilitate ongoing exploration of each chapter of the curriculum in a community setting.
  • Prerequisites: None.
  • Standard Size: Unlimited
  • Target Audience: Any interested person. No prior experience with SEE Learning is necessary.
  • Fee: None.

• Facilitator Certification Course (Level 1)
  • The SEE Learning facilitator certification course is a 9-12 month course delivered online, offered once annually. It prepares individuals nominated by SEE Learning affiliate organizations to serve as certified facilitators who will offer SEE Learning workshops and support SEE Learning implementation in their regions in coordination with the local affiliate organization. Doing so allows them to practice, develop, and receive feedback on their SEE Learning facilitation skills. We provide a safe and supportive learning community for participants to take risks while developing their understanding and skills in SEE Learning.
  • Prerequisites:
    • Completion of a SEE Learning educator preparation workshop
    • Nomination by a SEE Learning affiliate
    • One year of engagement with SEE Learning (e.g. teaching SEE Learning in a classroom setting).
    • Experience in education, teacher training, contemplative practice or other relevant fields.
    • Application form
  • Standard size: 120-160 individuals per year.
  • Target audience: Individuals who are in a position to offer SEE Learning educator preparation workshops for educators in coordination with a SEE Learning affiliate
  • Fee: There is no fee for participation, but applicants must be nominated.

I volunteered to lead the activity, but was worried that it would feel awkward and unnecessary in this group of people who have such strong interpersonal skills and are so considerate of one another. I shared a time when I was supported by a person in a big way and I never got a chance to speak with this person again. It seemed as if they just came into my life for this reason. My breakout partner shared a similar experience. I realized how much random acts of kindness impact lives in a very profound manner. Upon reflection, I notice that I remember more the random acts of kindness I received and never had a chance to pay back, more than the instances I gave back in a way or form.
